Chinese Name Generator With Pinyin, Characters and Meanings
This Chinese name generator builds Mandarin names the way real names are formed: a common family name first, then a given name of one or two characters, each chosen for its meaning. Every result shows the characters, the pinyin with tone marks and what each character means, so you can read, say and understand the name.
Writers use it for characters in novels and games, learners use it to pick a classroom name, and gamers use it for a stylish handle. Filter by gender and theme, match a family name to your own first letter, and generate up to 20 names at a time.
How to Use the Chinese Name Generator
- Pick a gender. Male, female, unisex or any. Unisex uses only characters common for both.
- Choose a theme (optional). Strength, wisdom, beauty, nature, virtue, peace, joy, brightness or ambition.
- Set the length and family name. One or two character given names, a fixed family name, or type your first name to match its first letter.
- Tap Generate Names. Read the meaning of each character, then download or share the card.

How Chinese Names Work
A Chinese full name is short. The family name, called xìng, is almost always one character, such as 王 Wáng or 李 Lǐ. The given name, called míng, has one or two characters. Two character given names are the most common today, so the Chinese name generator uses them about three times in four unless you choose a length.
Family names are shared by huge numbers of people. Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu and Chen together cover hundreds of millions of people in mainland China. That is why the given name carries the personality: parents choose characters for meanings such as wisdom, kindness or a bright future.
Family Names in the Generator
The tool draws from 60 of the most common family names, each with a short note on its meaning or origin. Many come from ancient states and dynasties, like 赵 Zhào, 吴 Wú, 秦 Qín and 唐 Táng. Others are everyday words: 林 Lín means forest, 石 Shí means stone and 马 Mǎ means horse. A family name rarely says anything about the person, so treat the meaning as history, not description.
Given Name Characters and Their Meanings
- Strength and ambition: 伟 wěi (great), 强 qiáng (strong), 志 zhì (ambition), 鹏 péng (a legendary giant bird).
- Wisdom: 睿 ruì (wise), 慧 huì (wise), 博 bó (learned), 文 wén (culture and writing).
- Beauty and grace: 婷 tíng (graceful), 雅 yǎ (elegant), 琳 lín (fine jade), 妍 yán (lovely).
- Nature: 雪 xuě (snow), 兰 lán (orchid), 海 hǎi (sea), 云 yún (cloud).
- Peace and joy: 安 ān (peace), 宁 níng (tranquil), 乐 lè (joy), 欣 xīn (happy).
There are 94 given name characters in total, each tagged male, female or unisex based on common usage. Jade characters such as 琳, 琪 and 瑶 are mostly used for girls, while 强, 刚 and 勇 lean male. Characters like 明, 安 and 晨 work for anyone.
Reading the Pinyin
Pinyin is the official romanization of Mandarin. It shows the sound of each character with Latin letters and a tone mark. The Chinese name generator joins the given name syllables into one word, as in Zǐhán, and adds an apostrophe when the second syllable starts with a, o or e, as in Jiā’ān, so the syllables are not misread. Drop the tone marks in places that do not support them, but keep them when you want people to pronounce the name well.
Picking a Chinese Name for Yourself
Many learners and expats want a name that sounds a little like their own. Type your first name and the Chinese name generator picks a family name with the same first letter: a Mike might get 马 Mǎ and a Sarah might get 苏 Sū. Then choose a theme that fits you and look through the meanings. Say the full name out loud with the tones, and if you plan to use it at work or on a business card, ask a native speaker to confirm that it sounds natural.
Chinese Name Generator Ideas for Stories and Games
- Novels and dramas: give a whole family the same surname and pick given names from one theme.
- Games and RPGs: use one character given names for short, punchy NPC names.
- Classroom names: a Mandarin teacher can generate 20 names and let students choose.
- Usernames: combine the pinyin with a number for a handle, then check it on the platform.

Honest Limits
- Mandarin only. Cantonese, Hokkien and other readings of the same characters are not shown.
- Simplified characters. Traditional forms are not included.
- Short meanings. Each character has more shades of meaning than a few words can show.
- No birth chart or zodiac matching. Some families choose names with these; this tool does not.
Male and Female Chinese Names
Set Gender to Male and the Chinese name generator uses characters such as 伟, 杰 and 鹏 along with unisex ones. Set it to Female for characters such as 婷, 雅 and 瑶. Unisex keeps to characters like 明, 安 and 晨 that suit anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Chinese name generator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup and runs in your browser.
Are these real Chinese names?
They are built the way real names are: a common family name followed by one or two given name characters. Each character is a real character that Chinese parents use in names, shown with its pinyin and a short meaning.
Why does the family name come first?
In Chinese the family name always comes first, so Wang Ziyan is Mr. or Ms. Wang. The card also shows the Western order for forms that ask for first name and last name.
What do the tone marks mean?
Mandarin has four main tones, and the marks over the vowels show which one to use, as in Wáng (rising) or Lǐ (dipping). The same syllable with a different tone can be a different word.
Can I get a Chinese name based on my English name?
Partly. Type your first name and the tool picks a family name whose pinyin starts with the same letter, such as Lín for Laura. It does not translate the meaning of your English name.
Are the characters simplified or traditional?
Simplified, as used in mainland China and Singapore. Taiwan and Hong Kong use traditional characters, and some of them look different.
How many names can I make at once?
Five by default, or 10, 15 or 20 with the How many names menu.
Should I use a generated name for a tattoo?
Check it with a native speaker first. A generated name is a good shortlist, but sound, tone flow and cultural feel are best judged by someone who speaks Mandarin.
