Elf Name Generator With 7 Subraces Like High, Wood and Drow

This elf name generator creates six elf names per tap by default, or up to 20 with the How many menu for a chosen subrace: High Elf, Wood Elf, Drow, Sea Elf, Snow Elf, Eladrin or Half Elf. Every family name comes with a meaning, like Thafen meaning Leaffern, so your character has a story built in. Use it for D&D, Pathfinder, fantasy novels and games.

Elves in most fantasy worlds are split into cultures that sound very different. A noble high elf, a forest wood elf and an underground drow should not share names. That is why this elf name generator gives each subrace its own sounds and its own word roots.

Elf Subraces and How Their Names Sound

High elf names

A high elf name generator should sound formal and bright. These names use soft, long sounds like Aelion or Saelathiel, and family roots such as sil (silver), ael (star) and rin (crown). Think old courts, towers and libraries.

Wood elf names

The wood elf name generator side is earthy and short: Bryndra, Thalren, Ivywen. Family roots include tha (leaf), orn (oak), rae (deer) and tae (wolf), so you get names like Ornrae, meaning Oakdeer.

Drow names

Drow live underground, so the drow name generator uses sharp sounds with z, x and v: Zesthra, Valnafein, Xulyss. Roots include dun (shadow), ven (spider) and xil (venom).

Sea elf, snow elf and eladrin names

Sea elves use flowing sounds and roots like thal (tide) and pel (pearl). Snow elves sound hard and northern, with roots like ky (ice) and win (winter). Eladrin names follow the seasons, with roots for spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Half elf names

The half elf name generator mode mixes cultures. Some results get a human first name such as Rhys or Wren with an elf family name, others get a full elf name. That reflects a character raised between two worlds.

What Makes a Good Elvish Name

  • Soft consonants: l, r, th, s and v appear a lot in elvish names.
  • Vowel endings: many female names end in a, ia or iel; many male names end in on, or or is.
  • Meaning: elves are often named after nature or the sky. Every family name from this elven name generator has one.
  • Easy to say: if your table cannot pronounce it, shorten it.

Our Invented Elvish Word List

Tolkien built real languages for his elves, and those meanings belong to his world. To avoid confusion, this elvish name generator uses its own list of 59 short roots, each tied to one English word: lun is moon, ras is river, ara is song, mor is dark, and so on. When two roots join, the meaning joins too. You can use the list to name places and items in your world as well.

Using Elf Names in D&D and Stories

Players use an elf name generator to name a character at session zero, while game masters use it to fill a city with NPCs in seconds. In a story, give a family name meaning that hints at history: a drow house called Dunven (Shadowspider) tells readers what to expect. If you need names for other fantasy races or a full cast, try our fantasy name generator, which covers humans, dwarves, orcs and more. This page stays focused on elves only. For a smaller and cheekier hero, the gnome name generator builds clan names in the same way.

Elf Names for a Whole Party or Family

Need names for a family or a whole group of elves? Set the subrace once and tap the elf name generator a few times. Keep one family name and change the first names to create siblings, or keep the roots from one subrace for a whole village. Mixing a high elf parent and a wood elf parent? Generate one name from each subrace and give the child a first name from either side.

You can also use the meanings to name things around your elves: a ship called Silverstar, a sword called Shadowblade or a forest called the Oakdeer Wood. That keeps the language of your world consistent and makes the elf name generator useful well beyond character creation.

Honest Limits

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this elf name generator free?

Yes. It is free with no signup, and you can tap as often as you like.

Which elf subraces are included?

High Elf, Wood Elf, Drow, Sea Elf, Snow Elf, Eladrin and Half Elf. Each has its own sound palette and its own set of family name roots.

Do the family names have meanings?

Yes. Each family name joins two roots from our own elvish word list, and the card shows the meaning, such as Silael meaning Silverstar. The list is invented for this tool. It is not Tolkien’s Sindarin or Quenya.

How many name parts are there?

287 first name syllables across six subraces, 59 meaning roots for family names, and 24 human first names for half elves. That makes many thousands of combinations per subrace.

Can I choose male or female names?

Yes. Pick Female, Male or Any. Elf names are often less tied to gender, so feel free to swap.

Are these D&D elf names?

They fit D&D 5e and Pathfinder elves well, but they are original names, not copied from any rulebook.

How are half elf names made?

A half elf gets either a human first name or an elf first name, plus an elf family name. That mirrors how many half elves are raised between two cultures.

Can I save the names?

Yes. Download the card as a PNG or share it from your device.
